Mike Rogers Launches Campaign for Open U.S. Senate Seat in Michigan

Mike Rogers, a prominent figure in Michigan's political landscape, has officially declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. This announcement comes in the wake of Senator Gary Peters’ decision to step down and not seek re-election in 2026, which has left an essential seat up for grabs in a closely divided Senate.

As a Republican from Livingston County, Rogers is strategically positioning himself to potentially flip the seat to Republican control. The Republican Party currently holds a narrow majority, emphasizing the significance of this upcoming race. In his campaign launch video, Rogers conveyed his dedication to strengthening skilled trades, cutting government spending, and lowering everyday costs for citizens, including gas, groceries, and prescription drugs.

Rogers emphasized, “Alongside President Trump, I’ll fight to bring good, high-paying manufacturing jobs back to Michigan, and I guarantee we’ll protect Social Security for our seniors.”

Rogers brings a wealth of experience to the race, having served in the military and as an FBI special agent before moving into politics. His political career includes serving as a state senator from 1995 to 2000 and later as a U.S. House representative from 2001 to 2015. After his congressional service, he transitioned to a media role, hosting CNN’s “Declassified” and offering insights on national security. Reflecting on his diverse journey, he noted, “The lessons I learned working on a factory floor, serving as an officer in the United States Army, and then as a federal agent protecting our communities, taking down drug dealers and gangsters, taught me about grit and sacrifice. But I knew I could do more for Michigan.”

Previously, Rogers had attempted to secure a 2024 U.S. Senate position after the retirement of Debbie Stabenow (D-MI 8), facing a narrow defeat against Democrat Elissa Slotkin. He is now the second candidate to enter the race for Peters’ vacated seat, following Democrat Mallory McMorrow, who declared her candidacy on April 2.

Currently, Rogers is the lone Republican candidate in this race, but additional Republican contenders are expected to join. Speculation indicates possible candidates include U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga and Tudor Dixon, the Republican who recently ran against Governor Gretchen Whitmer in the 2022 election.
